Band in Bulgaria!

June 30, 2005
Yes indeedy-do, 'tis true...Tamboura is going to perform in Bulgaria! While playing at the 2004 Blues to Bop Festival in Lugano, Switzerland, Tamboura attracted the attention (presumably by their music and not their off-stage antics) of a daring concert promoter from Bulgaria who happened to be in town on a visit.

He introduced himself to Tamboura percussionist and Lugano resident, Zack Zanecchia, and mentioned that he thought Tamboura would be a good match for his jazz festival back home in Bulgaria. Mr. Zack, ever the enterprising entrepeneur, made note of this and during the ensuing year cultivated a relationship with said Bulgarian promoter.

And lo! It is to be. Perhaps because the tamboura is the national instrument of Bulgaria, perhaps because folkrock'n reggae/calypso are alien to Bulgarians, or perhaps he simply liked the looks of Miss Mary and the band...perhaps we'll never know for sure? At any rate, Tamboura (with nary a tamboura in sight!) will be performing at the 8th annual Bansko International Jazz Festival. The band will leave the US on August 6 for Sophia, Bulgaria and travel to the ancient mountain resort town of Bansko where the festival is held. They will remain in Bulgaria for the entire week of the festival and then will travel about the region looking at this 'n that. Here is the link to their really cool website; Bansko Jazz Festival

Daktah Easy plans to take plenty of pictures which he promises to publish on the Tamboura website. Miss Mary plans to learn how to say "I need to sit down now" in Bulgarian and learn how to play a tamboura. Dan-O plans to learn how to play in 7, 11 & 13-time like a real Bulgarian. Sam is remaining behind in the states to build his house and will drum with the band via satellite. NOT! Tamboura is recruiting a drummer-to-be-determined as of e-press time. And Mr. Zack himself will travel from his digs in Switzerland to play percussion with his old friends and bandmates.
