Shakespeare asked it in Romeo & Juliet. Uncle Bubbel asked it when caught trying to pass himself off as Miles Davis. And the guys in RAS MOON & CORNERSTONE were confronted with the question recently as well. What's in a name? Well... Ever since its inception in April '06, all the press releases and promotional materials for the Cape Verdean reggae singing sensation Ras Moon listed his new riddim section as CORNERSTONE. The name seemed most fitting as the drummer, bassist and guitarist were 'cornerstone' members of other popular regional bands and the name had a nice ring to it: RAS MOON AND CORNERSTONE. Perfect name, yes? No. Dr. Easy has always insisted that "You don't find the best names; they find you." And so it was to be for Ras Moon that a much more prophetic, poetic and proper moniker was to be born. As it happened, every gig the band booked that spring and early summer, the clouds gloweringly gathered, the skies darkly frowned, the wind whipped leaves and small birds into confetti, ozone-laden shards of lightning cracked open the heavens sending an ark-inspired deluge cascading to earth. For every band load-in and load-out the instruments and gear shuddered with saturation. Stage clothes longed for a hot dryer. Shoes sloshed and squeaked their regret. Gala outside parties and festivals were either cancelled or, too-late, the band found itself ankle-deep in mud, huddling under undulating plastic tarps defying the odds of a direct lightning strike. . .not big fun. One Tuesday night after dodging sinister sneaker-soaking street-streams and running for cover into the Verdura/Due Bistro in Great Barrington, MA, guitarist RicH, dripping exasperation, said "The name of this band ought to be RAS MOON AND MONSOON!!!!". Everyone looked at each other and grinned. The perfect name had indeed found them. Prophetic, poetic and proper, indeed! | |||||
